Panalpina rolls out new IT platform in Germany ahead of US

SWISS forwarding giant Panalpina, having started to adapt its new information technology platform to its first "big country", Germany, is now preparing to take on its biggest challenge, the United States.

"While we see continuous strong volumes, we are still facing margin erosion," said Panalpina CEO Stefan Karlen, explaining the reason why.

"We expect market challenges to adversely impact profitability and we anticipate lower results for the first half of the year, compared to last year," he said.

Once the German IT roll-out is complete, 30 per cent of all transactions will be handled on by the new platform, said the Panalpina statement.

As usual, as it did when it adapted transactions in Switzerland, Singapore, Italy and Canada to the new system, Panalpina techies first tackled German ocean freight, which they expect to be done by July before moving to air freight transactions, expected to be adapted by October.

Germany already handles the highest number of transactions on the new platform, which secures significant operational benefits which lessen the impact of market volatilities, said the statement.

As planned, Panalpina went live with its new transportation management system at the end of May, in different business units throughout Germany.

"With the go-live and phased deployment of our new transportation management system in Germany, we have successfully demonstrated the system's ability to scale-up to higher volumes and are now tackling larger countries with more confidence," said chief Panalpina transformation officer Alain Dejalle.

"To put things into perspective: Panalpina Germany is our third biggest organisation in terms of shipment transactions globally. The successful roll-out in Germany will further confirm the system's capabilities.

Preparations for US deployment are well advanced.

Said Panalpina German country manager Dominik Wiesler: "Ensuring business continuity for our customers is always the top priority when we roll out the new system in a country. I am happy to report there have been no disruptions or negative impacts on our customers. We've made great progress and our teams have done a tremendous job."

Said Panalpina CEO Stefan Karlen: "I am very pleased with the successful roll-out in Germany. This is an important milestone in our transformation programme and validates both the scalability and robustness of our approach."

Panalpina operates 500 offices 70 countries, and it works with partners in another 100 countries. Panalpina employs 14,500 worldwide.
