From China with love: Lufthansa to fly in two Berlin pandas
A NEW panda facility will be officially opened by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping after a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F with two Pandas from Chengdu lands at Berlin Schonefeld Airport on Saturday June 24.
The pandas, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, will be accompanied by two zoo keepers from Chengdu and veterinarian Andreas Ochs, who said: "Meng Meng and Jiao Qing will enjoy ample bamboo snacks while en route. We will be able to visit them any time during the flight."
Precautions have been taken to cope with urination and defecation en route as the container in which they will be travelling is equipped with absorbent mats.
Flight time from Chengdu to Berlin via Novosibirsk is around 12 hours and 20 minutes.
Top Lufthansa wrangler Jorg Bodenroder said: "We feel that being asked to assist with this transport recognises our wealth of expertise in transporting animals properly. We are pleased to contribute our extensive experience to this cooperation and provide a first-class service."
