Britain freight lobby urges May to forget full Brexit and remain
BRITAIN'S Freight Transport Association (FTA) has called for the chastened post-election Conservative government to pull away from Brexit plans and remain in the European Union.
"Exiting the customs union threatens the imposition of tariffs, border checks, customs declarations and huge amounts of bureaucracy for the significant number of UK businesses that trade in the EU," said FTA deputy chief James Hookham.
The FTA said that 44 per cent of the UK exports in goods and services were went to the EU in 2016, valued at GBP40 billion (US$50.6 billion) out of GBP50 billion of the country's total exports.
"It is now imperative that that the new government focuses its efforts on supporting the logistics sector to ensure that business can continue to trade efficiently with our EU customer and suppliers," he said.
