Removal of paperwork leads to increase in Russian rail freight traffic

THERE has been an uptick in containerised cargo booked on the spot market since shippers in Russia are no longer required to submit paperwork to rail carriers that took between one week and 10 days to gain approval, says deputy general director Leonid Voronin for operations at RZD subsidiary, Centre of Corporate Transportation Services.

Containerised rail freight volumes in Russia rose 9 per cent year on year through May, putting the sector on track to set a new annual record of 3.5 million TEU on the back of other changes taking place in the containerised rail industry.



Last year, containerised rail traffic increased by 11 per cent compared to 2015 to reach a record 3.3 million TEU after volumes declined for the first time in five years in 2015, reported IHS Media.



Changes in the containerised rail sector include minor tweaks to customs processes, such as the introduction of electronic declarations for some China-Russia border crossings in the Russian Far East, which reduced customs' clearance times for shipments at the border to just two to three hours compared with up to two-and-a-half days previously.



The expansion of expedited China-Russia rail services and transshipment on China-Europe rail passing through Russia have also helped to drive growth
