Indian Customs in Mumbai seize 1.5kg gold smuggled from Dubai
INDIAN Customs authorities have netted 1.5 kilogrammes of gold allegedly smuggled in as part of a consignment of electronic goods sent by air to Mumbai from Dubai.
According to Central Intelligence Unit (CIU) officials, the agency received a tip-off that the gold was flown into Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport earlier this month, reported The Hindu.
"The consignment was opened and examined, and we found 21 gold biscuits hidden in the cavity of an inverter's transformer. The biscuits were concealed between the metallic strips inside the inverter. The gold weighed 1.5 kg, and is worth INR40 lakh (US$62,159)," a CIU officer was quoted as saying.
The officer added that the consignment contained other contraband. "The airway bill of the consignment claimed that it contained hair creams, mouth fresheners and soap, along with the inverter. However, we also found 90 cartons of Gudang Garam cigarettes and 6,000 pouches of RMD brand gutka in the consignment, and these have been seized as well," the officer said.
Using the address stated on the consignment, which had come from a firm named M/S Tom International, CIU officials are carrying out searches at multiple locations across the city in an effort to identify and locate the intended recipients of the illegal goods.
