Hamburg's quarterly container volume slips 0.7pc to 2.2 million TEU
THE Port of Hamburg抯 first quarter container volume declined 0.7 per cent year on year to 2.2 million TEU, said the port authority.
Thus, flows with China fell two per cent to 637,000 TEU year on year, reported Varna's Maritime Herald.
But bulk surpassed the 12 million tonne mark for the first time, and transshipment increased 3.4 per cent to 11.9 million tonnes. General cargo fell 0.7 per cent year on year to 23.1 million tonnes.
Laden box liftings rose 0.04 per cent to 1.9 million TEU, while empties fell 4.9 per cent to 0.31 million TEU. Containerised goods at European ports went up 0.6 per cent overall to 663,000 TEU year on year.
Traffic between Hamburg and Latin America rose 6.4 per cent to 311,000 TEU, while traffic to Australia and Oceania rose 19.9 per cent to 13,000 TEU.
Volumes connecting Hamburg with Africa decreased 5.5 per cent to 70,000 TEU while Hamburg-Asia volumes fell three per cent to 1.2 million TEU.
But volumes flowing to and from Hamburg with 10 major trading partners increased - up 15.6 per cent to 120,000 TEU to Russia, by 5.5 per cent to 89,000 TEU to the US, up 0.4 per cent to 76,000 TEU with Malaysia and up 2.8 per cent to 66,000 TEU with the UK.
The administration of the port expects the restoration of cargo flows, taking into account the approach of vessels floating on more than 100 line services.
The Port of Hamburg is part of the loop of 10 Asian services of new alliances of container operators - THE Alliance and OCEAN Alliance, as well as two services from 2M.
In the first quarter of 2017, the number of port calls of container ships with a capacity of more than 14,000 TEU increased by 61 per cent (74 vessels).
