Newark Airport re-opens after blaze triggers sudden closure
NEWARK Airport, one of the airports feeding New York, has recommenced services after an engine fire on board an aircraft resulted in a passenger evacuation using the jetliner's emergency chutes. Five passengers were reported suffering from minor injuries, with one requiring treatment.
According to a statement from airport authorities posted on Twitter, emergency response teams were sent to the United Airlines' aircraft, flight number 1579, while it was taxiing off the runway at Newark heading towards San Francisco.
The aircraft control tower had notified the crew that flames were spotted coming from one of the engines, ABC's Dan Linden earlier tweeted in a statement from the carrier.
