Port of Incheon dredges to 16 metres to dock 8,000-TEU ships
EXPANDING Korea's Incheon port, the country's second biggest, the authorities say the harbour will be dredged to 16 metres by June.
The harbour, which has a draft of 14 metres, will soon allow 8,000 TEU vessels to dock, according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The port lies just 40 kilometres west of the capital city of Seoul.
The KRW83.5 billion project (US$74.2 million) also includes a plan to build two large docks for 2,000 TEU containers, adding to the current three container piers.
The ministry said that the upgrade will help Incheon port play a bigger role in handling maritime traffic that is critical for growth.
