Canada to slow Boeing fighter buy if Boeing blocks Canadian plane sale

THE Canadian government said it will review planned purchases of Super Hornet fighter jets from Boeing if Boeing continued blocking the US sales of Montreal planemaker Bombardier.

Boeing tells the International Trade Commission that Bombardier is selling its C Series aircraft unfairly at unsustainable low prices and seeks countervailing duties to be imposed.

Said Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland: "Boeing's petition is clearly aimed at blocking Bombardier's new aircraft."

Ms Freeland then said Canada would enter talks Boeing about its plans to buy 18 Super Hornets, reports Bloomberg News.

"Our government will defend the interests of Bombardier, the Canadian aerospace industry, and our aerospace workers," she said.

"Boeing admits it does not compete with exports of the CS100 aircraft, so it is all the more difficult to see these allegations as legitimate, particularly with the dominance of the Boeing 737 family in the US market," she said.

Bombardier offered to make its C Series aircraft smaller to win a United Continental order, Bloomberg reported.

The proposed "CS100 Lite" model was meant to cater to United's wish for a shorter plane, said Bombardier vice president Ross Mitchell.

Mr Mitchell spoke at a hearing before the US International Trade Commission, where Boeing has accused Bombardier of selling its planes at unfairly low prices.
