Uber to help truckers find freight till self-driving trucks replace them
DISRUPTIVE and controversial Uber is working on a platform to connect truckers with freight the way it puts drivers in touch with passengers, reports New York's Engadget, the AOL blog.
Like the cab sector deal, Uber's Global Freight is meant to offer a streamlined service to end the arduous process that goes into packing a truck for shipment, said the article.
Currently, truckers use a broker or another service to negotiate rates and book cargo, the article said.
The Uber system promises to eliminate payment headaches by paying within a few days people rather than the usual billing cycle that can be 30 days or more.
Drivers can also get compensated for layovers or time spent waiting to load shipments, it said.
Uber is positioning this as a win for drivers truckers and small business owners, but the real competition is expected to be from Amazon.
The online retail giant is developing its own tracking app to help eliminate the costs associated with third party freight brokers as a major shipper Amazon is also working on oceanic platform and optimising air cargo loads.
Amazon is also working on a scheme that will eliminate drivers all together, but that is years away.
Nonetheless, a self-driving truck has already made in a ton of beer runs in Colorado even though it is said that the system needs some work.
