DHL Global Forwarding to open hub in Stuttgart to tap China rail
DHL's Global Forwarding unit has set up a central competence hub in Stuttgart, Germany to boost its rail services between Germany and China, ahead of Beijing's drive to pursue its 'One Belt One Road" initiative.
The main target industries are: automotive, technology, mechanical engineering and retail.
The plan also calls for the development of multi-modal transport solutions and coordinating end-to-end transport processes, from collection, export and transit formalities, the rail transport itself through to customs clearance on arrival and final delivery by truck or combined rail transport.
Other services include track and trace systems for temperature-sensitive cargo, and also the team is developing tailored security systems for very high value goods.
DHL Global Forwarding Germany and Central Europe chief executive, Volker Oesau, said that rail freight volumes between Germany and Asia "have increased 10-fold in just one year". He added that the establishment of the new Stuttgart centre would increase growth further and help fine-tune its service offering.
