New US$200m container terminal to be built in Cambodia
Sihanoukville Autonomous Ports (SAP) is to build a US$200 million container terminal as part of an expansion project due to be completed in 2022.
The new container facilities will increase the annual capacity of the main deep sea port of Cambodia to around one million TEU.
The new development is set to meet increasing growth in the volume of containers passing through the port, with the existing container terminal expected to be overloaded by 2023, the Container Management reported citing local media.
SAP's director-general Lou Kim Chhun told Khmer Times that the port currently handles more than 400,000 TEU and expects container volumes to rise to over 700,000 TEU 2023.
The new terminal will be equipped with a 350-metre quay with a depth of 14.5 metres.
SAP is currently studying the project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), from which it is expected to seek a loan for the construction of the new facilities. SAP has reportedly received approximately US$178.6 million in loans so far from the JICA.
In 2015, the port launched a US$74.2 million project in 2015 to build a deep multipurpose seaport, which will serve imports/exports of coal, steel, fertilisers, rice and oil, and is set to be completed next year.
