Wan Hai Shipping joins CSSF at latest meeting in Dubai
TAIWAN's Wan Hai Shipping Lines Ltd has become the latest new member of the Container Ship Safety Forum (CSSF), a global business-to-business network aiming to improve safety performance and management practices in the container shipping industry.
The Taiwanese shipping company enlisted as a member directly after the first biannual meetings in 2017 in Dubai, held in the U.A.E. recently, which was hosted by United Arab Shipping Company.
The CSSF now represents more than 40 per cent of the TEU capacity of the global container ship fleet.
The meeting agenda focused on sharing best practices and experiences on safety of navigation, especially on the use of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) as primary means of navigation. Another important topic was the conduct of navigational audits.
Fourteen of the 15 CSSF members at the meeting also concluded the 2016 CSSF Performance Report. The CSSF's Lost Time Injury Frequency (LTIF, as per OCIMF definitions) for 2016 was 1.15, a significant improvement compared to 1.38 in 2015.
The performance report also includes data for the members' performance during Port State Control (PSC) Inspections. The average number of deficiencies per PSC Inspection increased slightly to 1.10 in 2016 (1.08 in 2015) for the CSSF members' vessels.
The classification society ABS supported the meeting with a lecture on their "Mariner Safety Research Initiatives".
Aslak Ross from Maersk Line and Christoph Werner from ship manager E R Schiffahrt were unanimously elected to serve a second term of three years on the forum's steering committee. Their key tasks will be to push ahead with the 2016 approved CSSF strategy and the development of best practice guidelines for container ships.
The next members' meeting of the forum is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong November 6-7, 2017.
