Many hurdles lie ahead for new Long Beach port chief Mario Cordero

THE former chairman of the US Federal Maritime Commission and president of the Long Beach Harbour Commission, Mario Cordero is to head up the port of Long Beach.

He arrives at one of the most testing times in the history of container shipping. The road ahead is fraught with uncertainties: a glut of excess capacity, new mega shipping alliances, infrastructure constraints to handle the new megalithic ships, weak rates, subdued world trade, and trade trouble brewing between the US and China.

These challenges serve as a test of Mr Cordero's knowledge, skills set and expansive experience.

Sentiment is positive that Mr Cordero will rise to the challenge and manage the string of headaches confronting the port that handles US$180 billion worth of goods annually, reported Long Beach Press Telegram.

While at the FMC, Mr Cordero dealt with global issues and received accolades for his approach to finding solutions to challenges ranging from severe port congestion to new shipping alliances to the collapse of Hanjin Shipping.

As a Long Beach harbour commissioner, a role he assumed in 2003, Mr Cordero also became an environmental champion, which included creation of the 2005 Long Beach Green Port Policy.
