Canada makes move to trade more softwood lumber with China
A WAY to profit from US trade difficulties with Beijing is to sell more of Canada's softwood lumber to China, says Canadian Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne.
The reasoning behind this drive is due to softwood being an environmentally-friendly building material that can satisfy a need for more housing without adding to greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr Champagne's trip to China includes a high-level economic dialogue with the nation's vice-premier, who he hopes to sell on diversifying into becoming part of Canada's softwood lumber customer base, The Canadian Press reported.
The US has announced duties of up to 24 per cent on lumber imports, the latest flare-up in the decades-old softwood lumber feud between Canada and its largest trading partner.
