CMA CGM joins Adani to run Mundra - India's 'biggest' container port
FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM and India's biggest terminal operator Adani Ports have entered into a venture to run Mundra Port's new container terminal for 15 years, the companies have announced.
Running the operation 850 kilometres north of rival Mumbai in northwest India, will be the CMA CGM subsidiary CMA Terminals & APSEZ, which will operate Terminal 4.
Under the terms of the deal, the partnership contract can be extended twice for 10 more years. With its expansion now complete, Mundra Port claims to be India's biggest container port with an annual capacity of 5.5 million TEU.
"We have been present in India for over three decades now and employ 4,000 people," said CMA CGM chief executive Rodolphe Saade.
"This joint-venture with Adani Ports reinforces our position in one of the world's fastest growing economies and highlights our firm belief in the potential growth of trade between India and the rest of the world," he said.
Said APSEZ chief executive Karan Adani: "With this, Mundra is primed to set the bar even higher on the crucial parameters of efficiency, productivity and faster turnarounds, which will translate into competitive advantages for our customers."
Terminal 4 (CT4) has four units of 65 tonnes capacity of rail mounted quay cranes capable of handling 18,000-TEU vessels.
The terminal spans 27 hectares, with a 650-metre quay with 16.5 metres alongside. The yard equipment will include twelve 41-tonne rubber tyre gantry cranes (RTG), which will accommodate seven rows of containers and one operational lane.
"For CMA CGM, CT4 is its first port investment in India, and demonstrates its ambition to further increase its presence in this strategic and fast-developing country. CMA CGM has been present in India since 1984," said a company statement.
"With 4,000 staff in 29 offices, the company is calling on 13 ports in India, and offers to its Indian customers 11 direct weekly shipping services connecting India to Europe, Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
