Port of Virginia box volumes jump 8.9pc 232,148 TEU in March

THE Port of Virginia's container throughput rose 8.9 per cent year on year in March to 232,148 TEU, with loaded imports up 9.5 per cent to 99,665 TEU and loaded exports up 3.3 per cent to 92,384 TEU. 

Throughput in the first quarter were up 8.7 per cent to 681,040 TEU, reported American Shipper.



In March, inbound and outbound empties rose 90.3 per cent to 7,612 TEU and 13.3 per cent to 32,488 TEU, respectively. However, breakbulk volume declined by 14.7 per cent to 15,648 tons, while automobile shipments were up 30 per cent to 3,673 units. 



Said Virginia Port Authority CEO John Reinhart: "The new ocean carrier alliances will be fully operational this month and we will be seeing more big ships, like the Cosco Development, moving considerable amounts of cargo. As these ships arrive, planning and preparation are going to be paramount to our efficiency."
