United posts 20.3 pc cargo growth in first quarter, sales rise 13.4pc
UNITED, the busiest US air cargo carrier, saw first-quarter volume increase 20.3 per cent year on year to 748 million cargo ton miles.
Revenues also improved during the period, but more slowly at 13.4 per cent growth against last year's US$220 million.
Chicago-based United has now improved cargo revenue year on year for two sucessive quarters after a run of six straight declines.
While revenues improved, the airline's revenues per ton mile dipped below the 30 cent level to 29.41 cents per ton mile.
Delta Air Lines last week also reported first quarter performance, with revenues and traffic declining by just over one per cent. But revenues per ton mile were above United's at 34.04 cents.
Overall United saw revenues increase 2.7 per cent to per cent to $96 million.
Said United CEO Oscar Munoz: "In the first quarter, our performance gives us a lot of confidence."
Said United president Scott Kirby: "United is delivering on the commitments we made at investor day last fall. We saw positive trends in the revenue environment in the quarter and are optimistic about the year ahead."
