LA up 29pc to 788,524 TEU, Long Beach up 8.7 per cent to 505,382 TEU
CONTAINERISED cargo at the Port of Los Angeles was up 29 per cent year on year to 788,524 TEU while Long Beach handled 8.7 per cent more boxes totalling 505,382 TEU in the same period.
LA and Long Beach are North America's biggest ports accounting for 40 per cent of US imports.
LA port officials attributed the gain to strong export volumes, a post Lunar New Year cargo boost out of Asia, and US-based retailers moving merchandise in advance of new vessel alliance deployments that started in April.
Long Beach port officials said they were optimistic about 2017 as first quarter volumes increased 1.5 per cent year on year to 1,586,381 TEU.
"The rise in imports coming through Long Beach shows that consumers are feeling optimistic," said its acting CEO Duane Kenagy.
"Since their spending drives more than two-thirds of the economy, this is a great indicator for the jobs that depend on our port as we head into the busiest trading months of the year," he said.
