MMC looks into developing a 'maritime city' on Carey Island, Malaysia

WITH a view to developing an integrated maritime city on Carey Island, Malaysia, the Southeast Asian nation's largest port operator MMC Port Holdings will join forces with Adani Ports and Sime Darby Property under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to look into the feasibility of the plan.

A new port on Carey Island, 50 kilometres southwest of Kuala Lumpur, would form part of the proposed maritime city, according to the three partners, reported American Shipper.

Furthermore, MMC Ports and Adani Ports have inked a separate MOU to study the feasibility of extending Port Klang as part of the Carey Island Port Project.

MMC Ports owns the Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Terminal, the Johor Port Berhad multi-purpose port, the Northport (Malaysia) Bhd Gateway Terminal, and Penang Port Sdn Bhd. MMC Ports also has an associate stake in the Red Sea Gateway Terminal, the container port terminal in Jeddah.

Sime Darby Property is a subsidiary of Malaysia-based Sime Darby Berhad, which specialises in industrial equipment, motors, property and logistics; and Adani Ports operates container handling facilities at Mundra Port, Hazira Port, Kattupalli and Gujarat.
