Asiana Airlines finds niche in transporting pricey animals

SOUTH Korea's second-largest full-service carrier Asiana Airlines has carved out a niche shipping high-value, special cargo in a move to seek a new revenue source amid intensifying competition from low-cost carriers (LCCs), according to the nation's Pulsenews.

An analysis of the airlines' full-year 2016 revenue by the Maeil Business Newspaper, the company raked in KRW1.2 trillion (US$1.1 billion) in cargo revenue, which accounted for 20 per cent of its total revenue of KWR5.8 trillion.

Of the freight revenue, premium cargoes, such as live animals for breeding purposes or horses that require more complicated handling processes than general deliveries, took up 6.4 per cent. Asiana shipped a total of 36,403 tonnes of premium cargo last year, up 20 per cent from a year earlier. The airline's high-value freight would exceed 7 per cent by the end of this year.

Transporting horses, which can be more expensive than several hundred million won each, is one of Asiana Airlines' biggest and important deals in its air freight business. Its B747 freighter recently carried 50 horses from Chicago, US, to Jeju Island, the most popular resort Island also well-known for horse riding in Korea. To fly them across the Pacific Ocean, it disinfected the aircraft under the supervision of the US agricultural department and hired two grooms and one veterinarian who accompanied the horses to ensure their optimal conditions.

It also recently shipped 9,500 Belgian racing pigeons and high-performance Formaul One racing cars. As such special deliveries require more care, they generate income that is reportedly double that of a general delivery.

Asiana plans to ramp up its cargo revenue by focusing on premium cargos, a company official said.
