Aeroflot air cargo up 29pc to 14,231 tonnes as foreign tonnage increases

MOSCOW-based Aeroflot's cargo and mail volumes rose 29.2 per cent in February to 14,231 tonnes, driven by 53.5 per cent year-on-year increase in international freight to 9,182 tonnes, while freight flatten to post 0.3 per cent growth to 5,049 tonnes.

In the first two months of the year, cargo and mail volumes rose 39.5 per cent year on year to 28,622 tonnes; international volumes were up 69.6 per cent to 19,014 tonnes; and domestic cargo was up 3.3 per cent to 9,608 tonnes, reported New York's Air Cargo World.

The Russian carrier's full-year 2016 revenues surged 19.4 per cent against the previous year to US$8.7 billion.

Aeroflot deputy CEO Shamil Kurmashov said that the addition of new widebody aircraft to the group's fleet "enabled growth of cargo revenues by US$52.6 million."

The net positive effect on operating profit amounted to $245.7 million because of a strengthening of the rouble against international currencies in the fourth quarter, Mr Kurmashov said. This was also made possible, he added, "thanks to efficient revenue management and tight control of operating costs".
