Russia's RZD Logistics' 2016 freight volumes rise 5pc to 56 million tonnes

RUSSIAN Railway's freight forwarding subsidiary, RZD Logistics, posted a five per cent year-on-year increase in volume in 2016 to 56 million tonnes, with the main cargo transported being coal, metals, ore and containers.

Container traffic rose 20 per cent to 95,000 TEU in 2016, including 12,000 TEU of Russian domestic traffic, and 73,000 TEU of moving in both directions on the China-Europe corridor.

Imports from China to Russia accounted for 5,000 TEU - the same amount as exports from Russia to China. The RZD Express less-than-container-load service registered significant growth at 233,000 tonnes, reported Railway Gazette, Sutton, South London.

Internal rail logistics handled 11,000 wagons per month for 41 companies on 250 kilometres of industrial tracks.

"In 2016, we focused on deeper immersion in the transport infrastructure of our clients," said RZD Logistics CEO Vyacheslav Valentik. "We optimised supply chain management for them and improved our logistics services. Today, we're seeing the results of our efforts: the growth of key indicators and our client base."
