Lufthansa Cargo's Cool Centre for temp-sensitive goods expands
LUFTHANSA Cargo has broken ground to develop a "Cool Centre" at its hub in Frankfurt that is scheduled to open in the late summer.
"We've gained a great deal of experience in the worldwide transport of sensitive medications. CEIV certification from IATA has recently highlighted this. The excellent collaboration with numerous shippers from the pharmaceutical and chemical industries has prompted demand for our service to grow consistently," said board member, operations, Soren Stark.
Upon completion of the facility, 8,000 square metres of additional capacity will be available for cool chain cargo. After the extension, the entire infrastructure of the Lufthansa Cargo Cool Centre will be further improved.
Opened in December 2011, the centre currently offers 4,500 square metres of storage space over four different temperature-controlled chiller rooms, ranging from minus 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, as well as a deep-freeze room and direct access to the airport apron. As a result, it is currently the largest hub for temperature-sensitive freight in Europe.
