Heathrow air cargo facility to be equipped with Siemens' advanced handling
SORTING technology provider, Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics (SPPAL), is to equip a Heathrow air freight centre with the latest in handling systems. The facility will be used by British Airways, now a unit of International Airlines Group (IAG).
Under the deal with IAG, Siemens is to equip the terminal with "an intelligent system layout and innovative material handling systems" that will enable urgent air cargo to be processed in just 45 minutes, London's Air Cargo News reported.
Handling systems will include four elevating transfer vehicles (ETVs) and four transfer vehicles (TVs). The facility will also feature three truck docks for loading and unloading, four conveyor lines for build-up and breakdown, as well as 54 special cold storage and deep-freeze rooms for perishable goods.
With an area of 11,300 square metres and 110 positions for unit load devices (ULDs), the terminal with have an annual cargo throughput handling capacity of 135,000 tons.
Said IAG Cargo strategy chief Sarah Coulson: "Premium solutions such as the ability to process air cargo at short notice will help us to successfully keep ahead of the competition."
