Major carriers cut terminal handling charges in China

ELEVEN major international shipping lines serving the trade to and from China are to modify their Terminal Handling Charges (THC) in the wake of a report titled ''THC Investigation Conclusion'' released by the Chinese Ministry of Communications, according to a statement from Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Inc. (JIFFA).

"The report concluded that the terminal handling charge is in nature a component of international container transport freight and hence should be folded into freight rates or collected from the party that pays freight," the JIFFA statement said.

Effective April 1, the average THCs of the carriers across China will be adjusted as follows: APL: from RMB676 (US$98)/TEU to RMB576/TEU; CMA CGM: from CNY695/TEU to CNY560/TEU; COSCO Shipping: CNY717/TEU to CNY596/TEU; Evergreen: from CNY639/TEU to CNY 542/TEU; Hapag-Lloyd: from CNY696/TEU to CNY542/TEU; Hyundai Merchant Marine: from CNY706/TEU to CNY592/TEU; Maersk Line: from CNY681/TEU to CNY566/TEU; MSC: from CNY644/TEU to CNY503/TEU; MOL: from CNY678/TEU to CNY 564/TEU; NYK: from CNY 711/TEU to CNY 577/TEU; and Sinotrans Container Line: from CNY 664/TEU to CNY575/TEU.
