Boeing slashes 1,800 jobs in Seattle area as aircraft sales fall
BOEING Co. is laying off 1,800 staff employed in the Seattle-area to streamline its operations and cut costs.
The aircraft manufacturer approved voluntary layoffs for 1,500 mechanics, according to a person familiar with the situation, reported Bloomberg. An additional, 305 engineers and technical workers are leaving voluntarily, their union spokesman, Bill Dugovich, said.
Boeing informed its workforce in December that it would seek buyouts in a bid to cut costs and match employment to market requirements, company spokesman Paul Bergman said by email. Boeing also plans to cut commercial-airplane jobs by leaving open positions unfilled and through involuntary layoffs, he said. He declined to say how many buyouts have been approved.
Over the past year, the Chicago-based manufacturer has been winnowing employment in the Puget Sound area, as sales slowed for the jetliners, which accounted for 69 per cent of total revenue in 2016. Boeing has reduced its Washington state workforce by 9.2 per cent to 71,036 since the start of last year.
