One-day Singapore ballast water management course March 10
THE Ballast Water Management (BWM) convention Course in partnership with Indian Register of Shipping (IR Class) will be held 9am to 6pm Friday March 10 at the Singapore Recreation Club at City Hall.
The course will discuss the required criteria under the convention and useful information with respect to its full implementation before the due date.
Singapore Nautical Institute (SNI) has invited the Indian Register of Shipping (IR class) to conduct a one day course. Certificates of attendance will be awarded to all participants upon completion of the one-day course.
Ballast water is important for safe and efficient operation of vessels but it also leads to a variety of marine organisms being transported from one environment to another.
"Studies have revealed that invasion of such organisms causes harmful ecological, economic and health effects in the host environment," said the statement from organisers.
To regulate the ballast water discharge from ships and to control the transfer of invasive species, the UN International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has adopted The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships?Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention).
BWM Convention will enter into force on September 8. The BWM Convention is applicable to new and existing ships that are designed to carry ballast water and is of 400 gross tonnes and above.
This course is designed to impart knowledge on the requirements of the BWM Convention so that the stakeholders are better prepared to implement and comply with the Convention.
It will take the participants through the genesis of BWM convention, various requirements, and provide the knowledge required for planning, implementation and compliance of the Convention.
It would contain modules on: Genesis of BWM Convention, requirements of the Ballast Water Management Convention, implementation schedule, options for complying with ballast water management legislation, various ballast water treatment technologies, type approval process of the ballast water management systems, ballast water management Plan as well as frequently asked questions
The speaker will be Vijay Aurora, joint managing director of the Indian Register of Shipping, who is a marine engineer working with IRS since 1990. Prior to joining IRS, he sailed with Great Eastern Shipping Company for five years and before joining Great Eastern, he was working as tool design engineer with a tractor / harvester combine manufacturing company.
