Zimbabwe grain millers want 40pc tariffs on South African imported corn
ZIMBABWEAN grain millers want 40pc tariffs South African imported corn and corn meal, reports Bloomberg.
"South African millers dump cheap GMO [genetically modified organism] maize meal into our economy and its time Zimbabwe realign its economy by localising production of its staple foods," said Tafadzwa Musarara, the chairman of the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe.
Once a corn exporter to its neighbourings, Zimbabwe has been an importer since the white farmers were expelled or expropriated in a land reform programme so that the land could be given to black subsistence farmers.
Zimbabwe has spent US$7 billion on imported corn and corn meal since 2002, Mr Musarara said.
The association has committed to buying 800,000 tonnes of locally grown corn and 100,000 tonnes of locally grown wheat this season, the association said. The country has wheat stocks of 115,000 tonnes, which it is struggling to use because of wheat flour imports, it said.
