India's Coimbatore airport cargo handling rises with passenger flight volume
COIMBATORE International Airport, which is connected to all four of India's metropolitan cities, plus Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Tirupathi, recorded 15,131 domestic and 761 international aircraft movements between April and December 2016, with airlines now operating at full capacity.
This compares to 13,186 domestic and 727 international aircraft movements over the same period in 2015, reported Chennai's Hindu daily.
With the growing number of flights, air freight handling is also on the rise. Cargo transported is predominantly fruit, vegetables and flowers.
These are flown from the region to Singapore and Sharjah in the bellyhold of passenger aircraft. Air cargo volumes are expected to surge once bigger aircraft begin operating out of the airport, according to an official.
