Savannah box volume up 26pc in January to 331,468 TEU

GEORGIA Ports of Savannah and Brunswick posted a 26 per cent year-on-year increase in January to a record three million tons of cargo with container volume up 16.2 per cent to 331,468 TEU.

"With on-terminal efficiencies bolstered by interstates [highways] within minutes of the port and the fastest westward rail transit in the South Atlantic region, Savannah's Garden City Terminal provides more reliable, more cost effective freight movement," said GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch.

At the Port of Brunswick, bulk more than doubled to 235,802 tons in January. Breakbulk at Ocean Terminal in Savannah and at the Mayor's Point and Colonel's Island grew 17.7 per cent to 211,575 tons.

Roll-on/Roll-off trade improved by seven per cent, with 52,778 units of cars, trucks and tractors moving across GPA docks in January.

Said Georgia Port Authority chairman Jimmy Allgood: "As we continue to expand our deeper harbour, you will see our ports continue to capture market share and bring new business to the state."
