LA Port's busiest January on record handling 826,640 TEU

THE Port of Los Angeles handled 826,640 TEU in January, a surge of 17.4 per cent over the same month in 2016, making it the busiest January in the port's 110-year history. It was also the second-best month overall for the port, eclipsed only by November 2016 volumes of 877,564 TEU.

The port attributed the surge in January to retail stores replenishing inventories after the holidays, increased US exports and cargo ships calling ahead of the Lunar New Year, when many Asian factories shut down, reports American Shipper.

Imports stood at 415,423 TEU during the month, while exports reached 162,420 TEU, year-over-year increases of 13.1 per cent and 28.7 per cent, respectively. The port also moved 248,797 TEU of empty containers in January 2017, 17.9 per cent more than in same month last year.
