Port of Virginia's box volume rises to all-time high of 2.6m TEU

THE Port of Virginia saw its container throughput in 2016 hit a record 2.6 million TEU, marking the second-highest year-on-year growth rate at 4.2 per cent in the US.

The chairman of the Virginia Port Authority's board, John Milliken, was quoted as saying in a report by The Virginian-Pilot: "We outstripped other east coast ports; we outstripped the west coast ports. We outstripped everybody in terms of our growth."

Everybody except the Port of Los Angeles, which announced that last year was the busiest on record for a western hemisphere port, with container throughput up 8.5 per cent year on year to 8.8 million TEU.

On the east coast, the port of Charleston in South Carolina saw a year-on-year gain of 1.2 per cent, while New York/New Jersey's volumes dipped 1.9 per cent, and Savannah, Georgia, saw volumes decline by 2.5 per cent.
