Pakistan's first deepwater box terminal due to open in April
CONSTRUCTION of Pakistan's first deepwater container terminal at the Karachi Port - a joint venture of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and Hutchinson Port Holdings - has entered its final development phase, and is expected to begin servicing its first mega ships by mid-April.
Sources say the KPT has been delaying their part of the project, which may not bode well with the investors who have set their sights on managing 20,000 TEU vessels to serve as hub terminal for mother ships coming to Pakistan, Karachi National reports.
Spread over 85 hectares and with a draft depth of 16 metres at the mouth of Karachi harbour, the terminal is designed to accommodate ships of up to 20,000 TEU. With South Asia Pakistan Terminals Ltd (SAPT), Pakistan will be able to lower costs for the country's importers and exporters and reduce the transit time for shipments.
According to industry sources, SAPT holds great significance for meeting the growing shipping needs of Pakistan. This can be an early harvest project from China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) point of view because Gawadar Port, which lacks supporting infrastructure - power, storage, roads and railways - will take a while to fully develop.
