Ohio's Wilmington Air Park wants to reopen second runway for Amazon

CLINTON County Port Authority in Ohio is seeking permission to split the US$1.5 million cost of reopening a second runway at Wilmington Air Park to accommodate Amazon's fleet of Boeing 767 freighters leased from Air Transport Services Group and Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc. and attract new customers.

Seattle-based Amazon leases 40 Boeing 767 wide-body freighters for package delivery and acquired a 10 per cent stake in Wilmington-based ATSG last March.

Ohio earmarked $3 million last budget cycle to improve the airport's primary runway and other infrastructure. The air park is still planning the projects and an alternate runway would allow it to make needed improvements to the primary runway without interrupting air traffic, Clinton County Port Authority executive director Dan Evers said, reported Puget Sound Business Journal.

German air cargo company DHL bought Wilmington Air Park in 2003 and invested $300 million into the former US Air Force facility. The second runway has been out of use since DHL left town in 2010, but it has still been maintained. Mr Evers said the runway improvements ideally would happen in 2017.
