Vienna airport to expand cargo facility by 30pc

VIENNA International Airport (VIE) is extending by 30 per cent its cargo facility and plans to open 15,000 square metres of warehouse space by year-end, amid a push by VIE to continue its expansion strategy, including the development of a 140,000-square-metre office park.

The facility will feature solar-power panels that will be "one of the country's largest rooftop photovoltaic electricity generating facilities," the airport announced. The airport already has 5,000 square metres of solar panels installed on the rooftops of other buildings, meaning the new facility will effectively double the air hub's existing electricity-generating capacity.

The airport plans to "target international firms, especially Brexit refugees from Great Britain in light of the fact that we boast a unique location in the heart of Europe," said member Gunther Ofner of the management board of VIE's operating company, Flughafen Wien AG, reported New York's Air Cargo World.

In the first three quarters of fiscal 2016, VIE's cargo volume was up five per cent year on year to 208,830 tonnes, with full-cargo flights making up half of its volumes and the remainder carried in belly holds.

"At present, about 800 tonnes of freight are handled daily at the airport, or about 280,000 tonnes annually, showing a clear upward trend," said Mr Ofner. "These investments are designed to generate further growth potential at the airport site and for the Austrian economy, but above all, to create new jobs in the logistics sector."
