Halifax's Stanfield airport emerges as major cargo hub with new facility

A C$5 million (US$3.8 million) loading apron at Halifax Stanfield Airport is helping it become a major air cargo hub shipping Nova Scotia lobsters, reports the Halifax Chronicle Herald.FAXTEXT = Air freighters are loaded on the new 17,000-square metre cargo pad. Shanghai's Yangtze River Express Airlines is the latest arrival with its five Boeing 747-400 freighter charters to meet demand from Chinese consumers.

"We certainly think we are a world-class cargo hub already. There's lots and lots of seafood exported from our airport all over the world," said Bert van der Stege, Halifax International Airport Authority's vice-president and chief commercial officer.

Nova Scotia seafood worth more than C$15 million has already been shipped overseas in the holiday season and that number will increase to around C$25 million by the end of January when Chinese New Year is celebrated, the London's Air Cargo News reported.

Airlines including Air Canada, CargoJet, Korean Air Cargo, Qatar Airways Cargo, CAL Cargo Airlines and FedEx all run cargo flights through Halifax.

Overall exports from Nova Scotia to China totalled C$420 million in 2015, an increase of more than 50 per cent from 2014, according to the latest figures released by the province.
