Maersk 3,000-TEUer makes first call at its APMT Turkish Aegean terminal
MAERSK's APM Terminals received the first call at its new Turkish 1.3 million TEU capacity Izmir terminal, the biggest box port in the Aegean, from Maersk Line's 3,000-TEU ship, the Bulan, reports London's FreightEurasia.
"We look forward to the journey ahead, making this port a success story for the country and the region," said APMT Izmir managing director Mogens Wolf Larsen on greeting the ship, adding that it had now launched a "new era in Turkish shipping".
"Turkey's very ambitious plans to become one of the world's 10 largest economies will rely in part upon new and greater access to the global logistics chain, and the larger vessels serving world trade," Mr Larsen said.
Operating under a 28-year concession agreement with Turkish petrochemical conglomerate Petkim, the new port cost US$400 million and can handle containerships of 16,000 TEU.
HSBC Bank forecasts industrial machinery and transport equipment will be responsible for 33 per cent of Turkish export growth between 2021 and 2030, increasing from 29 per cent for the five-year period ending in 2020.
