Panalpina donates charter flight to transport aid to needy children in Chad
A PANALPINA-chartered freighter has transported 80 tonnes of life-saving supplies for water treatment, sanitation and nutrition programmes to Chad, Africa, on behalf of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The donated flight was made in place of giving employees and customers Christmas gifts.
The relief goods, including 22 tonnes of blankets and tarpaulins for shelter, 15 tonnes of therapeutic milk sachets for severely malnourished children under five, medical equipment and drugs, arrived in the capital N'Djamena from Liege Airport in Belgium, which waived 50 per cent of the landing fee, London's Air Cargo News reported.
"Our goal is to reach the most vulnerable children that are in dire need of help. In landlocked Chad there are many of them," said executive director of the Swiss committee for UNICEF, Elsbeth Mueller. "We are very grateful for Panalpina's continued support with yet another relief flight to Africa."
In Chad 3.4 million people suffer from food insecurity and 200,000 children under five are affected by severe acute malnutrition. Since playing is very important and comforting for children uprooted by conflict, thousands of balls, skipping ropes and frisbees also made their way to Chad.
