Lufthansa Cargo to expand, upgrade its cool centre at Frankfurt hub in 2017
GERMANY's Lufthansa Cargo has unveiled plans to expand and upgrade the 'cool centre' at its hub at Frankfurt airport in 2017 after five years of operations.
The cool centre currently covers an area of 4,500 square metres and boasts four cold-storage rooms kept at different temperatures, a deep-freeze room, and has direct access to the apron.
From late summer the facility will occupy 8,000 sqm as the 3,500-sqm expansion is slated to commence in February. Aside from the expansion project, all of the cool centre's infrastructure will be upgraded, the company said.
"The expansion is driven by continuous growth in temperature-sensitive cargo," noted board member product & sales, Dr Alexis von Hoensbroech, adding that IATA recently awarded the cargo carrier and the cool centre the CEIV seal for pharmaceutical transports.
