Turkey's Petlim port's first phase opens with 800,000-TEU capacity
WORK on constructing the first phase of Turkey's Petlim port has been completed with its cargo terminal having an initial cargo handling capacity of 800,000 TEU. Once the build out is finished the port's annual container handling capacity will rise to 1.5 million TEU.
Petlim has been designed to meet the "current and future logistics needs of SOCAR," Azerbaijan's state oil company announced on its website, adding that when the port starts operating at full capacity, it will become the only port in the Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean regions to be able to accommodate vessels of up to 11,000 TEU.
Turkish petrochemical complex Petkim and the Dutch APM Terminals inked an agreement to begin development of Petlim port in March 2013, reported trend news agency. It cited SOCAR as stating that the second phase of Petlim's container port is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2017.
"The port also has a dock leveller, which will help to transship heavy cargoes from Star refinery - another structure where SOCAR invests," stated the oil company.
