Amerijet gives the go ahead for GPS device for cargo tracking
AMERIJET has approved Starcom Systems Kylos Air GPS Tracking Device for air cargo use aboard its aircraft to enable customers to track cargo using a smartphone, desktop or via their own tracking platform service.
The airline said that the move was part of the "the next generation" of services it intended to provide. One of the difficulties with tracking cargo using GPS devices is that the devices need to be turned off when the flight takes off, in the same way passengers need to turn their phones off.
To have a ground handler turn all tracking devices off prior to take off and back on after landing adds to the cost and complexity of using the devices, the London's Air Cargo News reported.
However, technology has been developed that means the devices can automatically turn themselves on and off as they detect when they are about to take off and land.
Amerijet's senior vice president business development, Pamela Rollins, said: "Starcom Systems latest development with the Kylos Air allows for close monitoring of high value air cargo, temperature sensitive products and equipment. The units go into 'Airplane Mode' while in the air, but communicate the moment they exit the aircraft, helping minimise the ramp time of sensitive cargo".
Chief operating officer of Starcom Systems LTD, Doron Kedem, said: "Amerijet's approval sets the stage for our Americas subsidiary to participate in industries such as Pharmaceutical, High Value and Electronics, which require constant monitoring".
