Apple puts DB Schenker in charge of its new distribution centre in India

DB Schenker has signed an agreement to run Apple's first dedicated distribution centre at Bhiwandi near Mumbai for its products sold in India. As one of Apple's global logistics partners, DB Schenker will own and operate the centre, reported The Economic Times, citing senior industry officials. The move to consolidate Apple's logistics operations in India is intended to ensure common pricing for offline and online sales and to gain greater control over the supply chain. At present, iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are brought into India through Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chandigarh, New Delhi and Hyderabad ?where value-added tax (VAT) rates vary ?and transferred to distributors from the airport itself.

"The distribution centre will allow Apple to stock its products adequately, will ease operations, and streamline its logistics and supply chains. It will also help in maintaining uniform price for its products, which will become much easier under the Goods and Services Tax regime," one of the executives was quoted as saying.
