UPS chooses San Bernardino airport to cope with spike in holiday shipments
THROUGHOUT December UPS will for the first time fly cargo out of San Bernardino International Airport to the company's Worldport air hub in Louisville, Kentucky. Four flights a week will depart from the airport operated by Boeing 757 aircraft.
President of UPS's southern California district Tom Cuce explained that the move comes as the company needs "additional capacity to deliver for our customers" given the "huge spike in holiday shipments."
Company officials said they expect to deliver 700 million packages globally between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, a 14 per cent increase over the same period in 2015, reported San Bernardino County Sun.
According to SBD Aviation director Mark Gibbs, the airport has a large warehouse where goods can be unloaded from a plane into trucks very quickly.
"We have invested in the infrastructure to support permanent cargo carriers, so those logistics companies will determine what best suits their network and we're here to support that growth," Mr Gibbs was quoted as saying in an interview.
"We do have the equipment and we have the facilities, both of which we've invested in to make it easy for them. It can be difficult to find a place that has excess capacity, facilities and equipment."
