Approval given by Philippine government to build new Cebu container port

THE Philippine government has approved the start of work on a proposed PHP9.2 billion (US$186 million) container port at Consolacion in Cebu.

The project was one of seven infrastructure projects approved by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte, IHS Media reported.

The project is a controversial topic in Cebu after the municipal government of Consolacion said it had created a separate agreement with a private developer for the construction of a PHP16.5 billion container port in the town. There are also concerns over the need to resettle families currently living on the proposed site.

"Since our project has already been approved by the NEDA Board, we will build the port," Cebu Port Authority general manager Edmund Tan told local media.

Construction of the port is to commence in the third quarter of next year after detailed engineering designs, preparatory works, and bidding is completed, Mr Tan said. The port is scheduled to begin operations in 2020.

Funding for the project is being provided by the national government and the government of South Korea.

The port will focus exclusively on containers, with bulk cargo handled at the existing port facilities. The new port is to be built on a 12-hectare site at Barangay Tayud.

A project to build a new road connecting the port with the town of Liloan in the north and the existing port in the south was also approved.
