China looks to seize Asian trade leadership after Republicans sweep US
CHINA quickly positioned itself as free trade champion at an Asia-Pacific summit over the weekend as US-led Pacific Rim trade pact languished in the face of a hostile Republican sweep in Congress, the White House and state legislatures.
Beijing aims to capitalise on the Republican hostility to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), with President Xi Jinping selling alternate vision for regional trade at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Peru.
"If the US gives up its leadership here, of course China will take the role," said Tu Xinquan, a trade expert at Beijing's University of International Business and Economics, who has advised China's government on trade issues, Reuters reported.
