HKIA's October air cargo volume increases 7pc led by transshipments

AIRFREIGHT volume at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) totalled 420,000 tonnes in October, up 7.1 per cent from the same month last year.

The growth was speared by a 13 per cent year-on-year growth in transshipments with significant traffic increases to and from Europe and Southeast Asia.

Cargo throughput grew 1.9 per cent to 3.7 million tonnes in the first ten months of the year compared to same period last year. On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 4.4 million tonnes of cargo, a rise of 1.3 per cent over the previous 12-month period.

From January to October, HKIA welcomed approximately 59 million passengers and registered 343,265 flight movements, representing year-on-year increases of 3.6 per cent and two per cent respectively. Although Hong Kong resident travel grew 8 per cent year-on-year in October, typhoon Haima disrupted airport operations during the period, which was reflected in mild negative growth of passenger volume of 0.9 per cent at 5.7 million, and flight movements of 0.6 per cent at 34,610 respectively.

Henry Ma, general manager, Airport and Industry Collaboration of Airport Authority Hong Kong said: "We are pleased to see airlines expanding to new destinations and offering more choices to travellers. This additional connectivity will reinforce HKIA's status as an international aviation hub."
