Construction of Malaysia's US$1.8bn Malacca Gateway Port to start in 2017
CONSTRUCTION of Malaysia's MYR8 billion (US$ 1.866 billion) Malacca Gateway Port, a private port located in Pulau Panjang off Malacca, is set to start in 2017, according to Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi.
The port is an investment from Guangzhou-based companies in a joint venture with a Malaysian company. "The project is also supported by the Guangzhou province government," the government official said in a report by Malay Mail online.
Last month, Malasian company KAJ Development Sdn Bhd signed a partnership agreement with Shenzhen Yantian Port Group Co and Rizhao Port Group Co to develop the deepsea port.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who attended the inaugural foundation laying ceremony for the port last month, reportedly said the port aims to attract 100,000 vessels annually once the project is completed in 2019.
Mr Ab Aziz said the new port, located near the ports of Klang and Tanjung Pelepas, will help ease congestion at these two ports by accommodating rising volumes.
