Uptick continues in September as Asia Pacific airlines see 5.3pc demand growth

THE Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) recorded 5.3 per cent year-on-year growth in demand as measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTK) in September, according to its preliminary figures.

The average international freight load factor rose marginally, by 0.5 percentage points to 63 per cent for the month, after accounting for a 4.4 per cent expansion in offered freight capacity, reported Logistics Insight Asia.

Commenting on the results, AAPA director general Andrew Herdman, said: Air cargo volumes aggregated for the first nine months of the year match those of the same period last year, reflecting the modest upswing in demand in recent months, bolstered by higher shipments of electronics designated for product launches."

Looking ahead, Mr Herdman concluded: Asian carriers face challenges in the form of intense competition and cost pressures, as crude oil prices have risen from historical lows. In addition, the lack of impetus for a revival in global trade activity may present some headwinds to sustained growth in air cargo markets."
