Global air cargo volumes up 5pc in September, Europe, Asia Pacific lead

GLOBAL air cargo volumes increased five per cent in September, marking the best monthly year-on-year gain in two years, according to market data from WorldACD.

October is expected to pull in a stronger result as the sector moves towards its traditional peak season.

WorldACD said the increase in total tonnage transported and a worldwide improvement in yields were signs of improving health in the air freight industry, reported IHS Media.

Cargo flying out of Europe reported the highest volume increase in September of eight per cent, followed by Asia Pacific with a six per cent year-on-year increase.

The analyst said at a country level, the US and China stood out as the most important growth markets. It said contributing to this was Hong Kong, which has started its climb towards the November peak earlier than usual.

The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) said despite a prevailing weakness in trade conditions, air cargo in September recorded a 5.3 per cent growth in demand as measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs).

The average international freight load factor rose slightly by 0.5 percentage points to 63 per cent for the month, after accounting for a 4.4 per cent expansion in offered freight capacity.

From January to September, air cargo volumes matched those of the same period last year following a modest upswing in demand in recent months that was bolstered by higher shipments of electronics designated for product launches, according to AAPA director general Andrew Herdman.

Sounding a cautionary note, Mr Herdman said: "Asian carriers face challenges in the form of intense competition and cost pressures, as crude oil prices have risen from historical lows. In addition, the lack of impetus for a revival in global trade activity may present some headwinds to sustained growth in air cargo markets.?

WorldACD data showed that the third quarter of 2016 has been better than the second: year-over-year volumes were up 3.2 per cent while yields, after having slipped in the second quarter, slightly increased.

Airlines based in Europe recorded the highest growth at 4.6 per cent year on year, ahead of those in Asia Pacific with 3.2 per cent growth, and the Middle East at 2.9 per cent.

Among the larger forwarders, Expeditors, CEVA, and Agility chalked up the highest growth in the third quarter.

When polled by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in early-October as part of the IATA's quarterly business confidence survey, industry heads continued to expect very little change in profits over the next year, despite pointing to an improvement in conditions for air cargo since early-2016. The heads of cargo said expectations for volume growth during 2017 remained positive for the cargo business.
